The School Resource Officer or Liaison Officer program is a program designed to build a three way community link between the Sheboygan Falls Police Department, Sheboygan Falls School District, and the community of Sheboygan Falls. Currently, there is one SRO assigned to the Sheboygan Elementary, Middle and High Schools. The SRO serves on a full-time basis throughout the school year and then is assigned back to regular patrol duties during the summer.
The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) defines “School Resource Officer”: Officers [who] promote a better understanding of our laws, why they were enacted and their benefits. They provide a visible and positive image for law enforcement. They serve as a confidential source of counseling to students concerning problems they face. They bring expertise into schools that will help young people make more positive choices in their lives. They also work to protect the school environment and to maintain an atmosphere where teachers feel safe to teach and students feel safe enough to learn.
In addition to serving as a law related counselor and educator, the SRO is also responsible for the following:
- Enforcement of state statutes
- Prevention of crime
- Protection of life and property
- Suppression of criminal activity
- Apprehension and prosecution of offenders
- Regulation of non-criminal conduct
- Enforcement of traffic and parking regulations
- Advise school personnel of potential security dangers
